If you ever find yourself in a photoshoot wondering “what should I do with my hands?” You’re not alone. Whether you’re showing off your new seasonal product, your favorite mug, or a tool-of-your-trade prop that helps tell your brand story, how you hold it matters more than you think.

As a brand photographer, I help clients feel confident and natural in front of the camera—and a big part of that is guiding poses and actions that feel like you (not stiff or awkward). Bonus – these pose ideas aren’t just for product-based businesses. They work beautifully for service providers, creatives, and entrepreneurs who want to bring personality, style, and intention to their brand photos.
So let’s dive into five creative ways to hold products or props that instantly elevate your photos!
How to hold products like a pro

1. The Close-Up (with a Blurred Background)
Hold your product straight out toward the camera and use a low f-stop.
This pose creates that gorgeous, dreamy background blur (aka “bokeh”) while keeping the product front and center. It’s perfect for showcasing details and drawing a viewer’s eye right where you want it.
Pro tip: This also works with props like biz tools, a plant or favorite flower – whatever helps tell your story.

2. The Examining Candid
Act like you’re picking up or inspecting the product.
This shot captures curiosity and connection. It’s a great way to show interaction without looking too posed. For example- you’re reading a label, adjusting a piece of jewelry, or smelling a scented candle. The key is to keep it light and natural—like a behind-the-scenes moment.
Keeping the energy candid is a great to way to make scroll-stopping content.

3. The Over-the-Shoulder Peek
Shoot from behind, so the back of your head is blurred in the foreground.
I love that this perspective invites the viewer into the scene—almost like they’re standing right behind you. It’s a cozy, intimate angle that adds depth and storytelling to photos.
This pose is perfect for anyone who wants to feel in the photo without being fully front and center. Plus, it keeps the focus on the product or prop.

4. The Slow-Mo Grab
Place the product on a flat surface and reach for it slowly.
This one is gold for Reels and videos, but it also makes for a really dynamic still shot. By staging a slow-motion reach (like you’re just about to grab your coffee, lipstick, or crystal), you create movement and anticipation.
It’s subtle, stylish, and oh-so effective.

5. The Cross-Body Casual
Hold your product in one hand, wrap the other arm around your waist, and glance to the side.
This pose feels effortless and playful—like you’re just enjoying the moment, not even thinking about the camera. It draws attention to your vibe and personality first, while the product gets to come along for the ride.
Use this when: You want to highlight your energy more than the item you’re holding.
Want to see this in action?
I put together a quick in-studio video to demo all five of these poses (with the help of one overripe banana) so you can visualize exactly how they work!
Whether you’re prepping for a brand photoshoot or just snapping some fresh content at home, hopefully this video will get your creative juices flowing.
