How to Get More Clients

The biggest mistake I see you making? How you are talking about your business.

So let’s start at the beginning. In order to get more clients, people need to be aware of you and what you do.

Enter: Branding.

As a brand photographer, I help you with photos to showcase your business and services. But visuals are only one side of the coin. Your message (words) are the other.

How to talk about your business

is something many people are uncomfortable with. I get it – they don’t want to sound “salesy.” But nailing this part of your brand is the key to getting more clients.

Your business needs to walk the walk (provide a great service) AND talk the talk (get the message out effectively). Let’s focus on the words you use in two simple steps:

Talking the Talk

1. What differentiates you?

Getting clear on what makes you special is the first step. If you are new to this work, ask clients! “What drew you in to work with me?” Brand new to biz? Ask friends and family. (Sometimes we are too close to it to recognize our awesome differentiation points.)

And if you still need ideas, use your story and experiences that brought you to this business. Those are going to be different for every single person.

Try it: Write down 4 things that set you apart.

My example:

  1. 18 years of professional photography experience
  2. Business degree in marketing
  3. Beautiful studio space to capture lifestyle photos
  4. My encouraging nature and positive energy

2. What problems do those solve for your ideal clients?

This is the step that most people miss. It’s incredibly important to take what makes you special (Step 1) and translate it into how it helps make the lives of your customers easier.

This is your selling point, and how you should focus your marketing message. Bonus points if you can boil them all the way down to saving time or money – both huge motivators in any buying decision.

Try it: Take each of your differentiation points and write down how each one helps your target market.

My example:

  1. My years of experience means I am fast – you get a ton of photos with a minimal time investment on your end.
  2. My marketing degree means I can help you define your brand story if you’re not sure where to start, and the photos give you lasting, evergreen content for all marketing channels. Social media posting is a breeze with a library of on-brand images.
  3. The studio space means you don’t have to spend time researching locations or money renting an Airbnb for your shoot.
  4. I make you comfortable in front of the camera so you can enjoy your session (and the photos capture your natural expressions.)

Conclusion: Get comfortable talking about your business. But don’t talk about what you DO – speak about how you HELP. Pairing intentional words with beautiful brand photos will place your business in a position to attract more desirable clients.
